About This Blog

Who Are We And What Are We Doing?

Welcome to our blog! The five of us are Greg (Dad), Mim (Mum), Bek (14), Matt (12) and Jude (10). We're a family of five from Adelaide spending 11 months of 2020 taking a road trip around  Australia, God willing, and this blog will be a catalogue of our (mis)adventures!

We're doing this trip to make the most of our last year together before Bek starts senior High School, and the boys follow straight after once she's finished. We've taken three shorter trips in previous years and have really benefited as a family unit from the time in close confines with one another, so we don't want to lose this last opportunity.

Why We're Blogging

There are three main reasons we've decided to set up this blog:

  1. It's a diary for us of what we've done! This is the main reason. It's surprising how much you forget about what you've done once you get back! We've done three previous trips, two of which have been road trips within Australia, and we've run a private Facebook group for close friends and family for these. We've always found it helpful to look back over the private Facebook groups to quickly find out what we did and when.
  2. Since announcing we're going to be away for almost all of 2020, many of our broader group of friends wanted to keep up with what we're doing, and some of those aren't on Facebook. We also wanted to be able to have more flexibility with how our content was arranged, so decided on a blog, a Facebook page and a YouTube channel.
  3. The internet's great for seeing how other people do things, and we've benefited so much from this! We're not sure what challenges we're going to run into, but if we document it, it'll not only create great campfire stories but there's a chance it'll help someone else avoid the same pitfalls.
What this trip is NOT about, though, is creating a heap of regular content. I (Greg) enjoyed the YouTube channel Seek Adventure, but the owner has just decided to shut the channel down because the filming and editing was taking away from the pleasure of the travel. The purpose of our road trip is to develop family ties and a love of God, not to look at every moment through a camera.

How To Follow Our Adventures

We have three channels we'll be using to communicate on which you can monitor:
  1. Follow this blog - This is where the main content will sit, so follow the blog and you'll get everything. You can also subscribe to email alerts at the bottom of each page so you're notified whenever we post new content.
  2. Join our Facebook group - we'll use this mainly to post an update of when we've got new blog content, but may from time to time add quick photos. It'll also be an easy way of notifying you all quickly of anything important.
  3. Subscribe to our YouTube channel -  any videos we post will go on YouTube, but in most cases they'll be embedded within the blog anyway. Please subscribe so you don't miss anything.

Comments and Mobile App view

The best thing is to comment with your Google account if at all possible. Blogger by default lets you comment with your Google account so this is natively baked into the whole blog.

If you want to comment with Facebook, we've added a widget to allow this but unfortunately it only loads on blog posts (not on separate 'Pages' like this one unfortunately), and adding the widget broke the mobile app view so unfortunately if you're on a mobile device you get the Desktop view instead. Perhaps in all our free time we'll look into that!

Thanks for joining us!

We're glad to have you along for the ride, and look forward to sharing our Big Lap with you! Please stay in touch and let us know what you're thinking!
