Dec 8 (Day 312) - Jurien Bay to Geraldton

We woke to a hot, windy morning with a forecast top of 42 degrees C! The site we were staying in was on the top of a hill so was always going to be a bit windy.

Our campsite near Jurien Bay

Morning tea at Jurien Bay with Mim's parents

After breakfast we did our two morning readings, then discussed our plans. On such a hot day we decided to try to get a good leg of driving done, and to stop and enjoy the surroundings on cooler days. So we packed up and headed down to Jurien Bay to take a quick look at the water. By this time it was about 10:30 at the time which is the traditional hour the stomach yearneth for a bakery! So we pulled into the Bay Bakery in Jurien Bay and enjoyed a delicious morning tea.

We then decided to take a quick walk down to the jetty and check out the water - and wow what a sight!

Jurien Bay

We thought Cervantes was good, as it was. But this looked even better. There's a fairly new jetty we walked along, and it didn't take long before we were all wishing we were in our bathers! Jude climbed down the ladder to check the water temperature, declared it to be 'so nice!', and eventually we capitulated and let him go in the water in his clothes. Once he was in, Bek wanted to do the same, and before two minutes were expired all of us other than Mim were splashing around in the gorgeously cool water of Jurien Bay!

Jude making sure the water was up to swimming standard!

Jellyfish sting!

The water was cool, clear, and with just enough movement to provide some gentle splashing. The only downside was a jellyfish sting I got on my right arm, but it was more like a series of pin pricks that burned a bit. The stinger stayed on my arm, a bit like a fine clear length of egg noodle, but a bit of vinegar cleaned it off and some ice took care of a bit of the swelling so the worst was past fairly quickly.

Harvest time!
Excitement over, we headed north out of Jurien Bay and stayed on the highway for a while. There's plenty of wheat harvesting going on at this time of year.

The next stop on our journey was Dongara, which is about 60km south of Geraldton. Dongara has a memorable place in our hearts as it's the place where Jude fell out of a tree and broke his leg on our trip in August 2019! :( So we stopped at the park and revisited the scene of the action.

The place where the broken branch snapped off
and Jude fell from, is still visible on the middle

Jude back in his tree - he won't be beaten!

No impediments now!

Jude with 'Kat', his impromptu nurse
on the night of the accident

We also dropped in to see 'Kat', the lady who lived nearby who came to his aid when it happened. He'd screamed so loud she'd heard from inside her house, locked her kid inside the house and ran across to find out what had happened. She was a great help in keeping Jude calm and attended to while I was on the phone to 000 and Mim was still on her way and sorting out other details. It was lovely to show her the repaired boy in full health and to thank her once again for her assistance. She also said she appreciated us coming back and seeing that everything had worked out.

The audiobooks we've been listening to on this trip have mainly come via Audible. Back in Perth We found we had several credits we hadn't used, and as we intend to cancel the subscription shortly we wanted to use those up. So we'd downloaded a few Agatha Christie series' and went through a couple of those. David Suchet has the perfect voice for Hercule Poirot!

Our camp for the night at John Batten Hall,
Drummond Grove

From Dongara we drove the remaining 60km to Geraldton, then about another 12km north of town to a free camp in a place called Drummond Cove.

I went to put the solar blanket on to charge the batteries a bit more and discovered the 12v power cable leading into the caravan had been chomped through! It looked like it had gotten pinched at some point which cut the cable and blew the fuse. So I had to leave that until I can get the parts I need tomorrow to repair that properly.
